If you have never heard of Pontian Wanton mee, then you surely are not native to the area. Pontian Wanton mee has a large cult-like following in Singapore, Malaysia and even Batam, Indonesia that testify to its huge popularity. The originator, Ah Chuan Pontian Wanton, is naturally in Pontian District, Johor, and still enjoying a huge thriving business. read more »

Those after a rustic or authentic kampung feeling can do no better than make a trip to the Restoran ZZ Sup Tulang in Kampung Bahru. Customers are seated in little attap pavilions in alfresco style on rough hewn logs serving as chairs. Be sure to order the Mee Rebus with tulang (lamb shank bones). read more »

If you are a fan of Kway Chap, then you definitely should try this stall at Batu Pahat. A delicacy consisting mainly of pig innards, the key to its savoriness lies in making of the dark stock in which the innards are carefully boiled to a delicate and soft texture. Hot favorites at this stall are its braised chicken feet, cooked to perfection with a hint of crunchiness, pig lungs and pig blood, seldom found elsewhere (and definitely not in Singapore). read more »

One of the many stalls serving lontong kering (a meal consisting nasi impit (rice cakes), vegetables and choice of meat), Fatimah's is definitely one of the hot favorites amongst the locals. At RM$4 a plate, it also comes with fried tofu, fried coconut shreds (a must-try!) and a choice of curry chicken or mutton. There are two kinds of Bah Kuet Teh (literally pork ribs with tea); the clear soup variety and the dark, herbal soup variety. Jia Jia restaurant offers the latter, and it is one of the best of its kind. Located at Perling, next to Guan Yin Chinese Temple, this Teochew noodle stall is one of the local favorites in Johor Bahru. Customers can choose from a wide array of fresh and colorful ingredients like fish slices, prawns, and vegetables which are all displayed prominently in the shop. The Perling Curry Mee is a must-try if you are in the area. Situated at Taman Perling, this (literally) hot local favorite will see hungry breakfast crowds that threaten to finish all the stall has to offer daily. The chicken meat is tender and the taupok (dried beancurd) is deliciously soft, and all soaked in a curry gravy that is the perfect balance of spices and coconut milk. read more »

Operating on a buffet concept, the restaurant offers delicious all-you-can-eat buffet of local fare at a decent price (RM$25++ per head): Nasi Beriani buffet every Wednesday and Chicken Rice buffet every Monday and Thursday.
