This was built on forum recommendation

Food:

  • Keelung Night Market is, I feel, the best night market in Taiwan and a must visit. It is a 40 minute train ride from Taipei. [Not yet located]
  • Luodong Night Market, in Yilan (about 1 1/2 bus ride from Taipei, and 2 hour train ride from Hualian) is also excellent, and
  • Taichung's Fengjia Night Market is also very famous. I would highly recommend you visit at least one of these 3.
  • Tainan has the best street stall food in Taiwan, and is the best place to get the most unique Taiwanese dishes. Added Tainan Garden Night Market
  • Lugang also has excellent snacks.
  • Overall there is excellent food all over Taiwan, though sadly major natural tourist sights/ areas tend to be pretty mediocre for food. Historic tourist sights (like Tainan and Lugang) are on the other hand among the best places for food.

Nature:

  • Taroko Gorge is the best easy to visit natural sight in Taiwan, though if you don't hire a taxi the bus can be a bit inconvenient. It is also the most unique. Unless you're set on mountain climbing, visit here.
  • If you're interested in mountain climbing,
    • Yu Shan and
    • Xue Shan are supposed to be not too difficult (not technical skills required, and there are cabins to stay in) and very beautiful. [Not yet located]
  • The various Hehuan Mountains on the central cross-island highway (best reached via Taichung) are even easier- you don't even have to sleep on the mountains. Maybe will stay in Honey Moon Hotel
  • A drive across the central cross-island highway (Taroko to Taichung) is worthwhile, but also a bit hard to do without your own car. You can take buses but you'll end up spending a lot of time on a bus... that may not be how you want to spend 2 days of your vacation.
  • Alishan and Sun Moon Lake are alright but not especially unique- give them a miss.
  • I haven't been, but the east rift valley is supposed to be great, especially closer down to Taidong.

Culture:

  • The Palace Museum I shouldn't have to tell you about.
  • There's a few other nice museums in Taipei as well.
  • Tainan and Lugang are the best places for traditional architecture.
  • Penghu also has many old semi-abandoned traditional villages (and some nice scenery), but I would only go if you think you have enough time after seeing everything you want to see on the main island.

  • To try out tea culture, Maokong is a nice place in Taipei (good food too), Not yet located] though Wisteria Tea House is a bit more classical.[Not yet located]

  • If you're passing through, Puli's paper museum and lacquer museum are pretty fun. Not worth a dedicated trip though.[Not yet located]

Maybe something like this would be good?

  • Taipei 4 nights
  • Lugang/ Changhua 1 night
  • Tainan 2 nights
  • Kending 2 nights
  • Taidong/ East Coast 2 nights
  • Taroko 2 nights
  • Taipei 1 night

Luodong Night Market is one of the biggest and most crowded night markets in Taiwan. If you are going to this night market, you should definitely look out for these following three snacks: Angelica Root Mutton Soup (當歸羊肉湯), Green Onion Bun (蔥油餅) and Bu Meat (卜肉). They are given the best remarks thus far, but you may have to wait for up till 20 minutes to get them. read more »

Being the second greatest historical town in Taiwan with at least three and a half century worth of history, Lugang is an ancient town that tourists would not miss just to experience how the lives of people in the olden days were like. Unlike other historical towns in Taiwan, Lugang has no skyscrapers or apartments as Lugang is preserved as it is, without any modern fusion of architecture. Lugang is also famous for its three quirky characteristics, being 'No Sky', 'No Ground' and 'No Women'. read more »
