In accordance with its name, Special Famous Roti Canai is famous for its crispy roti canai, a type of Indian flatbread sold in Malaysia. It is similar to Roti Prata in Singapore, or Kerala pottera in India. The stall has been in operation for decades, next to an abandoned warehouse, and has become a landmark along Transfer Road. read more »

Toh Soon Cafe(多春茶室) is a street side cafe that has been around for almost 50 years, offering its diners the traditional light breakfast of half boiled eggs, nasi lemak and charcoal toast bread. A small shop, its delicious toasted bread has drawn many, with locals, tourists and expatriates alike huddling in the small shop. The rich Hainanese coffee and homemade kaya of Toh Soon Cafe also makes great accompaniments to their toasted bread. read more »

A hidden gem at Lebuh Tamil, Ais Tingkap is a stall that sells the drink ais tingkap (window sherbet), so named because it used to be sold through an open window. Back then in the 1930s, people would make a takeaway from the window. An old Cantonese restaurant located in a two store shop house on Campbell Street, Tho Yuen Chicken Rice Restaurant has been around for decades, and continues to be popular amongst locals and tourists. It is well maintained, with simple marble tables and red plastic chairs. Ong Cheng Huat Seafood 王清发海鲜, in Bagan Lallang, is a popular food destination among the locals around the Butterworth area, who brave the flies and heat for a taste of their favourite dishes. It is famous not only for its seafood, like the steamed red snapper and stir fried mussels, but also for specialities such as barbecued chicken and fried bean curd. It is rather obscure and located out of town, so it is recommended to find the place using a GPS or map, or ask locals for directions. read more »

Asam Laksa, another of Penang's signature dishes, is a fish-based soup dish of rice noodles (Lai Fen) with raw cucumbers, lettuce, onions, chillies and mint leaves, topped off with shrimp paste (har koe) and a dab of ginger flower (bunga kantan). This legendary Asam Laksa, known by most Malaysians, is right next to the Air Itam Market, just a short walk from Kek Lok Si temple.
