Located at Jalan Gertak Merah, the Johor Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Malaysia. Built in 1928, it started as a private menagerie of the royal family before it was handed over to the government and opened to public in 1962. Visit if you are interested in taking a peek at the past when royalties spend money on frivolities like owning a private zoo, otherwise this small zoo is unlikely to provide any great entertainment to those more used to sprawling zoos of modern times. read more »

Known simply as the Old Temple by locals, this 130 year old temple is one of the oldest architectural structures in Johor Bahru. The most unique characteristic of this temple is that it actually worships 5 different deities, each from a different dialect group--Yuan Tian Shang Di (元天上帝) (大老爷) is worshiped by the Teochew, Hong Xian Da Di (洪仙大帝) (洪仙公) by the Hoklo (Hokkien), Gan Tian Da Di (感天大帝) by the Cantonese, Hua Guang Da Di (华光大帝) by the Hakka, and Zhao Da Yuan Shuai (赵大元帅) by the Hainan. Visit on the first lunar month (20-23rd) of each year, and you will be treated to the sights of its annual Chingay parade, known otherwise as the Parade of Deities, when the 5 deities will be carried around the city, complete with lion and dragon dances, martial arts performances and dance troupes. read more »
