Established in 1920 in dedication to Emperor Meiji who opened Japan to the West, Meiji Shrine is Japan's best known Shinto shrine. The original building was destroyed during the Tokyo air raids of World War II and was restored in 1958 through public funding. The Usui Pass Observation Platform (碓氷峠見晴台) offers panoramic views of the Gunma Prefecture, consisting of Mount Myogi, the Yatsugatake Mountain Rang, on one side and Mount Asama on the other side.
