Situated in the center of Tokyo, the Tokyo Imperial Palace is the main residence of the Emperor of Japan. The palace provides a precious spot of nature within the bustling metropolitan city, with its water-filled moat and tree-covered grounds and beautiful gardens. There are three green spaces within the Tokyo Imperial Palace, namely the Kokyo Gaien (Imperial Palace Outer) Garden), Kokyo Higashi Gyoen (Imperial Palace East Garden) and Kita-no-maru-koen Park, all open to the public for free. From Kokyo Gaien, visitors can view the Nijubashi (double bridge) that form an entrance to the inner palace grounds. The palace buildings and inner palace grounds are off-limits to the public, open only on New Year and the Emperor's Birthday. Guided tours with reservation are offered here at the Tokyo Imperial Palace throughout the year in Japanese, with an English pamphlet and audio guide.
This place is also known as 皇居.
