Situated on Po Fook Hill at Pai Tau Village overlooking Shatin, the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery (Man Fat Tsz), is one of Hong Kong’s most famous Buddhist temples and popular tourist attractions. Managed by lay-persons, it was founded in 1949 by Reverend Yuet Kai, who personally helped in its construction by carrying materials from the foot of the mountain. Born in Kunming in Southern China, he aimed to establish a Buddhist college, but eventually decided to found a monastery, resulting in the construction of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastry.
While the buildings were completed in 1957, it took another 10 years to complete all the miniature Buddha statues that number almost an impressive 13,000, now lining the walls of the main temple. The Ten Thousand Buddhas Monastery has two levels, with five temples, four pavilions, one verandah and a pagoda. Visitors will also find the embalmed body of Reverend Yuet Kai here, seated in the lotus position in a glass case in front of the main altar.

Must do tips
1. Get a workout by climbing up the spiral staircase to the top of the 9 storey pagoda. Gold Buddha statues await you at each level, and you will be rewarded with a great panoramic view over Shatin from the top. This is also the pagoda that was featured on the HK$100 banknote back in 2001.
2. Take a closer look at the miniature Buddha statues lining the walls of the main temple. Each one has a unique pose and expression and has the name of its donor inscribed on it.
