Originally known as Pulau Tembakul (Malay for a kind of fish), Kusu Island means Tortoise Island in Chinese, based on the legend that a magical tortoise turned itself into an island to save a Chinese and a Malay fishermen both shipwrecked in a storm. In fact, the island was originally shaped something like a turtle's back, but its shape has since altered a little due to reclamation. A small 8.5 hectare island located just 5.6km from Singapore, it is a popular pilgrimage destination, with thousands of devotees flocking to the Da Bogong (Tua Pekong) Temple to pray for prosperity during October. The Kermat (Muslim shrine) is also often visited by Muslims, especially popular with childless couples due to its strong links to fertility.
