Opened in January 1996, the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) aims to preserve and present the art histories and contemporary art practices of Singapore and the Southeast Asian region, particularly the visual arts. Boasting one of the world's largest public collection of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks and being the first international-standard museum specializing in art, the Singapore Art Museum is integral to Singapore's vision to being a global city for the arts. It collaborates with leading international museums to showcase both local and local and international art practices, as well as cutting edge art expressions, hoping to bring about a confluence of ideas and international flows of ideas and resources for a dynamic arts scene. the Singapore Art Museum also provides Southeast Asia's contemporary art with international exposure through its traveling exhibition programme and collection loan. Visitors here can experience the diversity of contemporary art practices and relate to the unique aesthetic and social context of Southeast Asia through the art works.
