In the past, there were only nine families in Jiufen. All the goods were transported using ships as there were no roads constructed on land. With this, there was a habit that was cultivated that only nine pieces of the same object would be purchased at any one time for reservation. Jiufen used to be a prosperous city due to its gold mining activities. In 1890, gold was discovered near Jiufen. From then on, the poor village which had only nine families grew to about 4,000 families. Unfortunately, with the decline of gold mining activities, Jiufen soon declined. Soon after its fall, many movies chose Jiufen as their film location. For example, the film Sad City has been awarded the first prize in Venice Film Festival. All these thus reminded people of Jiufen's existence. Currently, Jiufen is a famous tourist attraction. The well-known Japanese anime film, Spirited Away, was also adapted from the villages of Jiufen. Not only does Jiufen offers a wide variety of traditionaly Taiwanese snacks and food, the view from Jiufen is absolutely breathtaking at any time of the day.
