Built on two raised platforms of landfill supported by sheer walls of cut rock, Osaka Castle (大阪城) was constructed in 1583 on the former site of the Ishiyama Honganji Temple. It was intended as the centre of a new unified Japan under Toyotomi rule, and was the largest castle at that time. It was destroyed in 1615 by Tokugawa troops, and rebuilt by Tokugawa Hidetada in the 1620s but its main castle tower was struck by lightening in 1665 and burnt down. read more »
